Our thoughts are with the communities impacted by the serious fires on Kangaroo Island last Friday. As you may be aware from media coverage, it’s been a terrible few days for the island’s community. They have suffered enormously, and the full extent of the damage continues to emerge. The fire remains an ongoing concern on the western end of the island. The eastern end including Kingscote, Cygnet River, American River and Penneshaw, has not been impacted.
The South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) is hoping that cooler conditions over the next couple of days will assist in their continued fire-fighting efforts. Extra resources have been sent to the island to assist with the recovery and clean-up processes. While the situation is improving, there are still many road closures, and concerns over supplies of drinking water and power outages. These urgent priorities are being attended to by the relevant authorities.
The CFS is advising anyone travelling to the island to check with their accommodation or travel providers, and to heed all warnings while on the island. Tours are able to operate in areas of the island that are safe, and some tour operators commenced tours again from today.
The worst hit areas have been the tourism businesses on the south-western side, with the luxury Southern Ocean Lodge, Hanson Bay Cabins, Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Western KI Caravan Park and Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat suffering extensive damage. The Flinders Chase National Park has been substantially damaged with the Visitor Information Centre and café sadly destroyed. Once it is safe to access these areas, the Authorities will be in a better position to provide a more definitive update.
Pacific Destinations has suspended non-essential travel to Kangaroo Island for the remainder of this week. We have contacted affected clients and amended their travel arrangements accordingly. We will reassess the situation on Friday. However, Southern Ocean Lodge and Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat will not reopen for the foreseeable future.
